OUT 1146-- ILLI MO BITZ (JUNE 14-20)

HEY  OUTTOWNERS!
IT’s THAT TIME AGAIN!!
TIME TO GET TOWNED!!!

The first day of summer will be June 20!

BLACK MUSIC MONTH BITZ

This week we feature the late singer, Minnie Riperton
Minnie Jean Riperton (November 8, 1947 – July 12, 1979) was an American singer-songwriter best known for her vocal range of five-and-a-half octaves, and her 1975 single "Lovin' You". She was married to songwriter and music producer Richard Rudolph from 1972 until her death in the summer of 1979. They had two children—music engineer Marc Rudolph and actress/comedienne Maya Rudolph.[1]
Riperton grew up on Chicago's South Side. As a child, she studied music, drama, and dance at Chicago's Lincoln Center. In her teen years, she sang lead vocals for the Chicago-based girl group, The Gems. Her early affiliation with the legendary Chicago-based Chess Records afforded her the opportunity to sing backup for various established artists such as Etta James, Fontella Bass, Ramsey Lewis, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, and Muddy Waters.
While at Chess, Riperton also sang lead for the experimental rock/soul group Rotary Connection, from 1967 to 1971. In 1969 Riperton, along with Rotary Connection, played in the first Catholic Rock Mass at the Liturgical Conference National Convention, Milwaukee Arena, Milwaukee, WI, produced by James F. Colaianni. Riperton reached the apex of her career with her number-one hit single, "Lovin' You," on April 4, 1975. The single was the last release from her 1974 gold album entitled Perfect Angel.
Aside from her various hits, Riperton is perhaps best remembered today for her ability to sing in the whistle register, in which she had rare facility.[7] Riperton possessed a five-octave vocal range(the liner notes to her Petals legacy album ascribe five-and-a-half octaves to her). Riperton's ability to enunciate in the high registers set her apart from most other whistle-register singers. Riperton was also noted for her ability to sound almost mechanical or instrumental in the whistle register. She has also been credited for her ability to sustain notes in the sixth and seventh octave for long periods of time. Having an innate ability to imitate many instruments helped lead to Riperton's discovery while she was a secretary at Chess Records. In her recordings. Riperton's highest recorded note reached in the whistle register was F7 on the third scale of "You Take My Breath Away". In a 1998 interview for Vibe magazine,Mariah Carey cited Riperton as an influence on her.

THE BIG A&E NEWZ STORY THIS WEEK IS:

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey will be talking to eight, Kardashian-Jenner family members in an interview set to air on Winfrey's cable channel, OWN.
Winfrey talked to Kris and Bruce Jenner and their combined offspring at their Hidden Hills, Calif., home. Also on hand wereKhloe Kardashian's husband, Lamar Odom, and Kourtney Kardashian's boyfriend, Scott Disick, OWN said Monday.

Oprah Winfrey surprised many fans by interviewing the Kardashian family for OWN’s “Next Chapter,” and the queen of talk took a moment to explain why she chose to go behind the scenes with the reality TV brood.

“Ok my friends I had the longest interviewing session I can ever recall, talking to ALLLLLLLL the Kardashians,” Oprah said in a post published on her Facebook page on Wednesday. “I had never met them, nor seen the show. I did a full on Kardashian Kram in preparation, watching major shows from every season.

“I genuinely wanted to know why they have become a cultural phenomenon? Why do so many people love to watch their every move and why do so many others love to hate them,” the post continued.

The sit-down yielded plenty of intriguing material, Oprah revealed, including shocking revelations from Kim about her ill-fated marriage to basketball star Kris Humphries.
“Everyone who’s asked was the marriage a publicity stunt? Why did she leave after 72 days? Her answer leveled me,” she wrote.

Additionally, Oprah said she received answers to all of her questions and “more,” noting that while the Kardashians are known for their transparency on camera, the family approached the interview with “another level of forthrightness and honesty.”

The interview will air 8 p.m. EDT Sunday on "Oprah's Next Chapter." It will be followed at 9 p.m. EDT with the second part of Winfrey's interview with rapper Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson.

Come on. Really? We all know the real reason she scooped up this reality show brood: ratings! Ratings! Ratings! She needs all the sensationalism to the S power to get OWN out of the ratings doldrums, okay. And we are sure Oprah didn’t ask this question, “So do you think you all became famous because of  the sex tape of Ray J having sex with Kim?”

UPDATE: We just got reports that Oprah DID ask Kim K about the Ray J sex tape making her famous! She teased it on her blog so this will be a ratings bonanza for Miss O.

Oak Park, Ill native and Emmy Award winning actress Betty White stopped by the White House on Monday to meet with President Barack Obama - and first dog, Bo.

The "Hot in Cleveland" star and President Obama were snapped chatting together in the Oval Office; her visit to the White House comes on the heels of her endorsement for the President.

White "very, very much favors" President Obama for a second term, she told the Associated Press back in May.

The "Golden Girl" not only got face time with Obama, she even spent some quality time with Bo.
White and Bo, the Obama's black-and-white Portuguese Water Dog, were spotted on the South Lawn together on Monday.

White is well-known for being an animal lover and activist.

White spoke with The Huffington Post  on how it was exciting to meet with the president.
"It was a thrill to be with Mr. Obama," White said in a phone interview, "but the big thrill was being with Bo, their dog. He's the cutest guy you've ever seen in your life. I spent a half-hour with him on my lap."
+++++++++++++++++++

In unrelated Betty newz, she was in  Chicago  this week where she was helping celebrate the 25th anniversary and grand reopening of the Museum of Broadcast Communications.
Bruce DuMont, the founder and president of the museum tapped White as a resource to bring awareness to the 62,000-square-foot museum which showcases television and radio achievements and memorabilia over the years.

“Television is my life and it’s been very good to me,” said White. “It’s time I return the favor.”

White said DuMont approached her last year “at one of the more expensive breakfasts I’ve had,” to discuss expansion plans and branding.

“I’m still in the business. My health and energy are good and I’m being invited to keep working. That makes me very happy,” said White.

According to Mediatakeout, Chitown reared rap superstar Kanye West gave Kim  Kardashian "a special 'promise' ring" on last Friday,. Although it's reportedly "just a friendship ring" the diamond is "HUGE" and "most people ... will consider it an ENGAGEMENT RING."

Although Kimye consider themselves to be "betrothed," which according to MTO means they're "not engaged ... but close to it," they're not actually calling it an engagement ring because "Kanye recognizes that Kim is STILL LEGALLY MARRIED to Kris Humphries. And that if he were to PROPOSE to Kim, it could NEGATIVELY impact her divorce case." Hopefully Kim's divorce attorneys have pointed that out to her before, but if not, or if she's refusing to listen to them, at least Kanye has a good head on his shoulders!

MTO also claims that the commitment ceremony, or whatever they're calling it, went down in Ireland, where they're celebrating Kanye's birthday. Supposedly the event was photographed (of course it was!), and Jay-Z and Beyonce were there.

Ho Hum…. whats next, another sex tape?

Chicago native and emmy Award winning comedian/talk show host Sherri Shepherd has contacted authorities over a series of menacing tweets she received from a Twitter user with the handle DaClone Killer, including one that read, "Somebody should drag u in a back alley and rape you."

A rep for Shepherd confirmed to E! News, "Law enforcement is involved as well as corporate legal and security departments. This matter is being taken very seriously."

In the meantime, Shepherd took DaClone Killer and other bullies to task via Twitter. And DaClone Killer, who, if you follow the thread, appears to have been incensed by something Shepherd said about Lil Kim, is still tweeting away, too.

MORE: Is Star Jones' Ex-Husband Al Reynolds Really Living at Sherri Shepherd's Place?!

The NYPD would not confirm that Shepherd had filed a report, but she vowed that she planned to call the cops on her twitagonist.

"@DaCloneKiller You think I should be raped in a back alley?" she wrote yesterday. "Let's see if the police agree w you & I took a pic of your tweet...I'M FILING A POLICE REPORT. SO TELL ME NOW WHAT SHOULD BE DONE W ME."

We are sure DaClone didn’t expect this publicity, but we think this will set a precedent as far as how far folk can go in regards to using new social media to express comments about someone. In a way, it’s a cyber assault and Shepherd did the right thing in reporting the twit..

Almost 21 years after his death, Alton Ill native and East St Louis raised jazz icon  Miles Davis was  paid tribute by America and France in the form of a postage stamp.

The influential jazz trumpeter is depicted on a pair of commemorative stamps along with legendary French singer Edith Piaf, issued on Tuesday by both the United States Postal Service and France's postal agency La Poste.

A first-day ceremony for the stamps was held at New York City's Rubin Museum of Art, attended by members of Davis' family and former colleagues.

"He was a man of many facets and I have been blessed to benefit from most of them," said actress Cicely Tyson, who is Davis' former wife. "He was a man who communicated through his music. Through his music, you knew his physical, mental, emotional and spiritual state. That's how he spoke to everyone."

Bassist Ron Carter, who played with Davis as a member of his quintet from the mid to late '60s, shared his memories of his former bandleader. "I met Miles in 1960 at a concert, so I've known him up until his passing," he said. "Miles was a person who always had something else to do. He and I were kind of the buddies in the band...He never advised Wayne [Shorter] how to write...he never told Tony [Williams] how to play the drums." He later added: "He played trumpet and he was my friend." (SEE STL NEWZ FOR MORE OF THIS STORY)

A followup on the recent East St Louis federal government raid against clubs and businesses in downtown EasT St Louis, Calling them havens for crime, the Saint Clair County States Attorney is charging the owners of two clubs in East St. Louis. Club Posh owners are charged with Maintaining a Public Nuisance and a security guard at Club 103 is charged with carrying loaded concealed firearms. The State’s Attorney says the charges are part of Operation Last Call, designed to deter violence. Also, the liquor licenses of Crown Royal Food Market and Gas continue to be suspended.

In related club issues, – In an effort to make Washington Avenue in downtown St. Louis safer, the St. Louis police department has assigned more officers to patrol the area and even shut down several roads to alleviate traffic congestion.
But when shots rang out last Saturday for the second time in recent weeks, two bouncers questioned the effectiveness of the police presence. According to the bouncers recent problems at the popular destination are the result of clubs in East St. Louis closing earlier.

Before pointing fingers, KMOX decided to talk to the Mayor of East St. Louis, Alvin Parks, to find out if there is any truth to the bouncers claims.
“I don’t know where that statement comes from,” said Mayor Parks. “But what I do know is that clubs in East St. Louis may not be closing any earlier.”
Parks says most clubs in East St. Louis close at 2 a.m. However there are several clubs on Washington Avenue open until 3 a.m.
Parks says he personally has no idea where people are from who have ever caused problems on Washington Avenue. But what he does know is that his city faces the same dilemma.
Looks like each side of the Sippi are tryin to blame the other for what’s happening with the crime and violence woes with the clubs (Parks seem to lean more on not trying to blame St Louisans traveling to the East Boogie for its current raid).  But our question is, is it really the clubs causing the problems or just the type of people who are already out and about causing problems. We think it’s the type of people who are going out and their intentions are to cause crime and violence when they go out, it just so happens to be at clubs that stay open in the late hours of the weekend. St Louis is using police barricades to curb the problem and East St Louis is giving temp revokes of liquor licenses  until the Feds came in to clean house. But we think its just a problem much bigger than the clubs.

A life-sized statue of Dred and Harriet Scott will be unveiled Friday in front of the Old Courthouse in downtown St. Louis.
The Dred Scott Heritage Foundation has raised more than $150,000 toward the statue’s $250,000 dollar price tag. The foundation will present the statue to the public through the National Park Service    , which oversees the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, including the Old Courthouse.
St. Louis native Harry Weber is the statue's sculptor. His proposal won through a blind selection process. Weber also created the Lewis and Clark statue on the riverfront and the Chuck Berry statue in the Delmar Loop.
The Old Courthouse is the site where the Scotts unsuccessfully petitioned in 1846 for their freedom from slavery. In its pivotal 1857 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld slavery in U.S. territories and denied the legality of black citizenship in America.

According to stltoday.com, The project, however, still faces a financial hurdle. The Dred Scott Heritage Foundation hoped to raise $250,000 but fell $100,000 short.

A fundraising drive launched two years ago at 17 M & I Bank locations and various donations from schools, organizations and families brought in $150,000. To cover the rest of the cost, donations will
continue to be accepted.

St Louis based carpet businesswoman Becky Rothman and her brothers, Jules and Arnold, have pulled the plug on Becky's Carpet & Tile stores.  According to reports, The chain's five locations closed on Monday, though employees are still working to fulfill orders and some customers were still picking up items.

Rothman reportedly blamed the chain's demise on the economy that led to a screeching halt of new home building as well as competition from big box stores.

According to the St. Louis and St. Charles counties assessors' websites, Rothman Properties is reportedly delinquent in paying more than $150,000 in property taxes from 2011 at four of its stores.

\Rothman is well-known in St Louis  for her local TV commercials in which she took on the moniker the "queen of carpet." Wearing a crown, she was sometimes seen pretending to fly on a magic carpet.

The family-owned business was started by her father who opened a carpet store in East St. Louis in 1954. After her father died in 1977, she and her brothers took over the two stores.
At its peak, Becky's Carpet & Tile had eight locations in the metro area. But the company began paring back its stores after the recession hit, including a store that closed last year in the Fairview Heights area.
The five remaining locations were in Fairmont City, St. Peters, South County, Hazelwood, and Manchester.
And she said there is still a possibility the company may consolidate and re-open the south county store.
